Satin Burgundy Gown

This satin burgundy gown was sewn for my cousins black tie wedding. I wanted a color that screamed "autumn" and this satin I found on Amazon was perfect. It was only $30 for 10 yards, and easy to work with!

The gown is one piece. Unlike some of the other dresses I've made that were actually a top and a skirt, this one is all sewn together which makes it a lot easier to put on and off, and there is less to worry about when I am wearing it.

The skirt was made of about 12 feet of the fabric box pleated into 2 inch pleats. The skirt was pleated, and pinned to a waistband that I had, and sewn up the back. A little bit was left open in the back, and the waistband had fabric loops sewn on the back to lace up. After it was done, I decided that I wanted there to be a slit, so I cut a triangle shape out of the front, around where my left leg would show, and tended a rolled hem so it would be finished.

For the top I sewed two rectangles together on 3/4 sides and then squished it flat to be a pointy trapezoid, or triangle on top of a rectangle. I taped the two points to my body and then draped them to wrap around for the bodice. Since I don't have a mannequin, this was really the only thing I could do to drape it on, and make sure that the two panels were equal.

It took a lot of workshopping, but I was eventually able to get it together, and sew each panel to one another before sewing it onto the waistband of the skirt.
