After seeing the Barbie Movie, I was smitten. The costumes in that movie were just gorgeous. I needed her pink dress, and I just so happened to have a slightly smaller pink gingham fabric in my closet, just waiting to be used (from almost a year ago!)
The skirt was about 3 yards of fabric, with 4-inch box pleats. The hem was a rolled hem, and the waistband was quite thick. I wanted the skirt to act almost as a bodice to the 'dress'. I wanted the skirt to be a little longer (like in the movie) than what I usually make.
The back of the skirt was joined together by grommets and pink ribbon on the waistband. I planned on this waistband resting just under my bust.
I constructed the bodice out of one piece of fabric that could wrap around my body with the tiniest bit of overlap. The one piece was folded over on the top with the right sides together. I then cut a 'challis' shape out in the front to make the front piece of the bodice.
To sew the whole bodice together, I cleaned up the edges of the two side panels, and then sewed the 'challis' shape to it so it would be rounded around the bust and fit better.
I put the grommets on the back, and then the bodice was almost done. The last step was to make the tie straps.
Using my bias tape maker, I took two very long and skinny strips of fabric and ironed them before using a finishing zig-zag stitch to make them stay. Then, I cut them each in half, finished the cut edge, and sewed each half onto the front and back of the bodice and then tied them into cute little bows on top.
To put it on, I put the bodice on first, laced it up, and then laced the skirt over. The fabric was a little different than the original in the Barbie movie, but I think it was still recognizable. I just didn't have a belt.
This was my outfit to wear down the shore with my friends, and it was thrown together over the span of the two nights before we left, very late at night/very early in the morning. But all in all, I think it was probably 10 hours total. It probably would have been done a little quicker had I not been doing it when the sun was about to rise.
